By Ben Deibert, photographing weddings since 2010. Updated October 2026.

We've photographed dozens of weddings at Pen Ryn Estate, in all three of its venues: the Pen Ryn Mansion, Belle Voir Manor and the River's Edge Garden Pavilion. The short version: you get a ballroom for the reception and real grounds for the ceremony and photos, all on one property along the Delaware River, so there's no need to leave for portraits. Below is what we've learned about the three venues, the best photo spots, what to do if it rains, and how to get great photos without missing your own wedding.

Pen Ryn at a glance:

  • Where: 1601 State Road, Bensalem, in Bucks County, on the Delaware River

  • Three venues: the Pen Ryn Mansion, Belle Voir Manor (the former carriage house) and the River's Edge Garden Pavilion (a large tent near the river)

  • Ceremony: outside on the grounds when the weather cooperates. Some couples marry at a church first.

  • Getting ready: usually at the Radisson Hotel Philadelphia Northeast, about 15 minutes away

  • Layout: ceremony, cocktail hour and reception each have their own space, right next to one another

  • Rain plan: the ceremony moves inside. Very doable if you decide early.

  • Weddings we've photographed here: more than a dozen, across all three venues

Where are the best photo spots at Pen Ryn Estate?

  • The tree-lined driveway. Our favorite. The big trees hanging over the drive on the way in make a great frame for portraits.

  • The buildings. The Mansion and Belle Voir both make beautiful backdrops.

  • The fence line. It runs along all three venues and works well for portraits.

  • The gardens. All three venues are well landscaped, which gives us plenty to work with.

  • The river. Lovely if you can get down there, but it's a bit of a walk, and the bank is often covered in goose droppings. Ask us before you plan on it.

What happens if it rains at Pen Ryn Estate?

The ceremony moves inside, and because the ceremony, cocktail hour and reception each have their own room, the staff have time and space to set up for the reception while you're celebrating. The one thing we'd say: make the call early. At one wedding the decision came late, and the ceremony ended up in a space that wasn't set up for it. Planned ahead, it's very doable. At another rainy wedding, the bride really wanted her ceremony outside, so we waited the rain out, and it worked.

Is it worth leaving Pen Ryn Estate for portraits?

No. There's so much on the property that we've never needed to go anywhere else. The time you'd spend driving is better spent with your guests.

How much time do we need for portraits at Pen Ryn Estate?

We usually plan about 30 minutes for family photos and about an hour for the two of you. Spread across the day, with the grounds right outside, that's plenty.

Should we do a first look? That's up to you. If you do one here, there's plenty of shade on the grounds, so we can find a spot in soft, even light, then move around the property from there. Mansion, Belle Voir or River's Edge: how do they compare for photos?

The Mansion and Belle Voir Manor are more alike than you'd think. Both reception rooms have windows along one side and a similar ballroom feel, and both have beautiful buildings to use as backdrops: the Mansion itself, and Belle Voir's architecture and portico. Belle Voir also has a lovely outdoor ceremony spot. The River's Edge Garden Pavilion is the one to pick if being right on the river matters to you, because the water is part of nearly every photo there.

Ceremony and reception at Pen Ryn

On a nice day, the ceremony is outside: on the lawn at the Mansion, or at Belle Voir's outdoor ceremony spot. Cocktail hour and the reception follow in their own spaces, all next door to one another, so guests barely walk between them. Some couples marry at a church first and come to Pen Ryn for the reception.

Who is Pen Ryn Estate a good fit for?

Pen Ryn gives you a ballroom reception without giving up the outdoors, so we use both. We do portraits on the grounds, under the trees on the drive, by the buildings and along the fence line, then let the rest of the day happen: the ceremony outside, cocktail hour, and the reception. With everything on one property, there's no van ride and no rushing, which leaves you more time with the people who came for you.

Couples who want a ballroom feel for the reception but still want the outdoors in the ceremony and the photos. It sits in between: more polished than a rustic barn, less formal than a grand city ballroom. If you want a buttoned-up, chic city wedding, look at our Center City guides instead.

Real Weddings at Pen Ryn

“We hired Deibert Photography for our engagement photos and wedding in 2024 and it was the best decision we could have made. The entire process, from initial discussion of pricing to creating our album in the studio. They did a great job of capturing our engagement, micro-wedding, and full wedding due to postponement! We would highly recommend Ben & Ashley. Thanks!.” -Miranda + Bill
